As part of the effort to promote mutual understanding between cultures, the Birmingham International Center sponsors International Women's Day, a global celebration for economic, political, and social achievements of women.  As part of this annual event, BIC presents the prestigious "Woman of Consequence Award" to a woman/women from China and/or of Chinese heritage in the United States.  Local "motivating women" awards are also presented.

You may also nominate a "motivating woman". If you know of a woman you would like to honor, please submit her name for consideration by filling out the application below.  We will select ten nominees to recognize as Motivating Women (See Full Description and the 2015 Honorees Below) at the International Women’s Day Dinner, and we will share her story so that others – both men and women – may be inspired by her.

The Two Women of Consequence Awards will go to Amy Chua and Louise Chow, Ph.D.

Honoree of the dinner, is Professor Amy Chua, the John M. Duff, Jr., Professor of Law at Yale Law School, will be our special honoree and guest speaker for the evening.  Author of several books including The New York Times Bestseller, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, and most recently The Triple Package, Professor Chua received both her A.B. and J.D. degrees from Harvard University.  She joined the Yale faculty in 2001 after teaching at Duke Law School for 7 years.  Prior to starting her teaching career, she was a corporate law associate at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton.  She specializes in the study of international business transactions, law and development, ethnic conflict, and globalization and the law.

She will speak on "The Best of East and West" in childhood discipline and development, as well as other subjects of significant importance about cultural differences in child rearing.

Motivating Women reflect diversity, culture, and achievement. They inspire and motivate us to live successfully and significantly by making differences, large and small, every day.  This has been an incredible year of accomplishment, change, and challenge for women throughout Alabama.  Do you know a woman who motivates you?

On May 5, 2015, as part of its Spotlight on The People’s Republic of China, the Birmingham International Center will host its annual International Women’s Day Dinner to honor ten women who live within the state of Alabama and inspire others through their work and dedication to a stronger, more culturally aware community.  We will also honor Professor Amy Chua, distinguished Professor of Law at Yale Law School.  Professor Chua is a legal scholar and bestselling author of “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother.”  She will be speaking on PARENTING … The Best of East and West.  This event is the perfect opportunity to honor parents you know and the women who inspire you!

There is no strict or rigid definition of a Motivating Woman.  She could be a woman who mentors the less experienced in her career field; a grandmother who volunteers to read at an after-school program; the first woman-president of your organization; or, a teacher who helped you realize the impact of education on your life.  The possibilities are endless.

Congratulations to the 2015 Motivating Women Honorees!
